Press Regarding Stop Global Warming College Tour III

Singer Sheryl Crow and climate change activist Laurie David will visit the University of Florida next month as part of the Stop Global Warming College Tour.

The 90-minute event will include a short performance by Crow, remarks by David, clips from the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" and a discussion with students.

The event will be April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the O'Connell Center. It is part of an 11-campus tour across the Southeast to bring attention to the issue of global warming.

The tour is one of several environmental events being held in Gainesville in the week leading to Earth Day, April 21. The Fifth Avenue Arts Festival is being moved from its usual dates in May to fall on Earth Day this year and will have more of an environmental focus, said organizer Nkwanda Jah.

Increasingly hot weather in May forced the event to be moved, she said. Ironically, the weather created the Earth Day connection that gives an opening for public education about global warming.

"It allows us an opportunity to do a lot more education," Jah said.

Scientists say power plants, factories and automobiles are releasing carbon dioxide and other gases that cause the warming of the Earth. Climate change is causing rising sea levels and could have other catastrophic consequences, according to experts.

The two-week campus tour will be used to encourage people to join the Stop Global Warming Virtual March (www.stopglobalwarming.org). More than 675,000 people from all 50 states have joined the virtual march, including UF President Bernie Machen.

The Philips Lighting Co. will provide students attending the tour with a free compact fluorescent light bulb. Compact fluorescent bulbs last up to 10 times longer and use about one-fourth the electricity of incandescent bulbs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Crow is a Grammy-award winning singer and songwriter. David is the founder of stopglobalwarming.org and the wife of Larry David, co-creator of the NBC show "Seinfeld" and star of the HBO show "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Dedee DeLongpre, director of the UF Office of Sustainability, praised David's commitment to stemming global warming.

"What she's doing is great in terms of bringing attention to the issue," she said.
